Martha Kalina, former director of Knox County Human Society, had a vision. If she was going to open a gallery, it was not going to be just any gallery. Her vision paid off. Gifts at 136 in Damariscotta has received quite a bit of attention lately. The gallery won Downeast Magazine’s readers choice two years in row, for ‘Best Gift Store’ and ‘Best Gallery’.
Martha hunts for custom, one of a kind work from local artists and craftspersons. The gallery has a warm and inviting feel. Shoppers are welcomed by Rick and Bruce and are there to introduce the artists to the buyer.
When I stopped in for the first time in July, it was Friday night, Damariscotta art walk. The place was abuz with community support, alive with excitement! I just had to come back for pictures and an interview.
The gallery was quite busy and I tried to keep out of the way while getting some shots. Bruce and Rick were connecting with each customer, explaining the artist’s process and background.
“We have many affordable items, some as low as $4,” said Rick Skolund, business partner. “I think our highest piece is $4000 but many items are in the $50 range, great for weddings or anniversaries.”
Give yourself a little extra time though, there are so many choices!
Make sure to stop in and say hi for me next time you are in Damariscotta.
